Norway : PhD Research Fellowship in Renewable Energy
The University of Agder invites applications for a full-time fixed-term appointment as PhD Research Fellow in Renewable Energy, for a period of three years, at the Faculty of Engineering and Science. The purpose of the position is research training leading to the successful completion of a doctoral degree. The position is located in Grimstad, Norway. The starting date is negotiable.
The PhD Research Fellow will work at the Department of Engineering on a project on the integration of wind energy into electricity supply schemes, with respect to the characterisation of
- temporal and spatial patterns of wind power generation in networks of different scales
- the predictability of wind power at the different scales
- the correlation of wind power and load at the different scales
in view of the stress imposed to the distribution grid and the dispatchable generation park, including storage facilities.
The following qualifications and experience will be particularly emphasised:
- Fundamentals of wind energy (1)
- Fundamentals of energy meteorology (1)
- Knowledge of the electrical supply grid (2)
- Knowledge of the statistical characterisation of spatial/temporal fields (2)
The successful applicant will have a master’s degree in a relevant field and must be enthusiastic about, and greatly interested in research involving simulation studies in a cross-disciplinary context.
The appointee must have the ability to work in a goal-oriented, organised, focused and independent manner. In the appointment process, emphasis will be placed on the applicants’ examination results as well as any previous research and development work. Relevant practical experience, personal suitability and good teamwork skills will also be emphasised.

The PhD Research Fellow must be admitted to the PhD Programme in Mechatronics within three months of appointment. More information about the programme and a complete list of admission requirements can be found on www.uia.no/tekreal/phd/ict/mechatronics.
The following admission requirements apply to the PhD programme:
- The average grade for courses included in the bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) must be C (or equivalent) or higher.
- The average grade for courses included in the master’s degree (or equivalent) must be B (or equivalent) or higher.
- The master’s thesis (or equivalent) must have a grade B (or equivalent) or higher.
A high level of oral and written proficiency in English is required. Applicants from some countries must document their English proficiency through one of the following tests with the stated results or better:
- TOEFL – Test of English as a Foreign Language with a minimum score of 550 on the Paper-based Test (PBT), or 80 on the Internet based Test (iBT).
- IELTS – International English Language Testing System, with a result of at least 6.0.
Short-listed applicants will be invited for interviews. With the applicant’s permission, UiA will also conduct a reference check before appointment.

The position is remunerated within the State salary scale, salary plan 17.515, code 1017, salary grade 48 (NOK 383 900). A 2 % compulsory pension contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund is deducted from the pay according to current statutory provisions.

- Summary (approximately 1-2 pages) of the master’s thesis (in special cases the University of Agder will ask for the complete mater’s thesis)
- Applicants who must document their English proficiency, must enclose TOEFL or IELTS test results (such results may be forwarded after the closing date)
- Summary or links to the applicant’s scientific publications (if any)
* The original diplomas/certificates and transcripts of records or certified copies of the original documents with a stamp, date, and readable signature from a public office (e.g. university, college, or police) must be presented to the university before appointment is made.
Very long documents should not be uploaded with the online application.
