Canada: Funded Ph.D. Research Opportunities in the area of sensing technologies for the forest products industry
Several Ph.D. opportunities are available for outstanding scholars within a NSERC Strategic research program on the use of sensors in the wood industry that is developed in University of New Brunswick (Fredericton, Canada) in collaboration with University of Toronto, Nagoya University and FPInnovations for the following specific research topics:
1. Ph.D.#1 “Testing the Polychromix MEMS device and the Conquest ground-penetrating radar system to measure log moisture contents and densities” under the supervision of Armand LaRocque (UNB), Paul Cooper (U of Toronto), Isabelle Duchesne (FP Innovations) and Joseph Nader (FP Innovations).
2. Ph.D.#2 ”Modelling of the influence of view and surface conditions on near-infrared spectra measured over wood based on Tsuchikawa’s model“ under the supervision of B. Leblon (UNB), S. Tsuchikawa (Nagoya U.), R. Stirling (FPInnovations) and M. Defo (FPInnovations)
3. Ph.D.#3 “ Hyperspectral imaging system for log moisture and density measurements “ under the supervision of B. Leblon (UNB), P. Cooper (U of Toronto), K. Groves (FPInnovations)) and T. Trung (FPInnovations)
4. Ph.D.#4 “Near-infrared transmittance device for log moisture and density measurements” under the supervision of B. Leblon (UNB), S. Tsuchikawa (Nagoya U.) and T. Trung (FPInnovations)
For each Ph.D. position, the applicant must have a M.Sc. degree in science, forestry, wood science, engineering or the equivalent from a recognized university. He/she must have at least a 3.0 GPA to apply. Each Ph.D. student will get full funding at the Natural Science and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) level.
Applications (CV, list of publications, and name of three referees) and questions should be emailed before December 15, 2011 to Prof. Dr. B. Leblon (bleblon@unb.ca)
