Uyghur History ئۇيغۇر تارىخى - [نادىر ماقالىلەر--]

The term Uyghur (ooey-GHUR say Uyghurs, WEE-gur say Americans), also spelled Uighur, historically was applied to a group of Turkic-speaking tribes that lived in what is now Mongolia. Along with the so-called Kokturks (also known as Gokturks) the Uyghurs were one of the largest and most enduring Turkic peoples living in Central Asia. Uyghurs are the native people of the region, which presently known as Sinkiang, Xinjiang (means "new frontier" in Chinese) or Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. The Uyghur language belongs to the Turkic group of the Altaic language family. About 10 million people in China speak it. Uyghur is very similar to other Turkic languages such as Turkish, Azeri, Kyrgyz, Kazakh, Turkmen, and in particular, Uzbek.

There are also about one million Uyghurs in some other central Asian countries mostly known as Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan and Tajikistan. Uyghurs have their homes in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Europe, Canada, the United States and Australia.

Here is PBS's documentary film about ancient Uyghurs:
