Description London: Diaspora Live! Welcomes in the studio this week the London Uyghur Ensemble and percussionist Malo Sonko from Sabari. The London Uyghur Ensemble comprises a fine selection of expatriate musicians from the Uyghur heartlands of Xinjiang Autonomous Region in Western China and Kyrgyzstan in Central Asia, along with new-found British musical friends and others from the Uyghur diaspora now settled in London. The group was formed in 2004 and made their debut at the Refugee Council’s ‘Celebrating Sanctuary’ festival a year later. Born in Senegal, Malo is an accomplished percussionist who plays a mix of traditional West African music with specific sounds from Casamance (Senegal). He has worked extensively in both the UK and Senegal. Malo and the London Uyghur Ensemble will be talking to Esmé Patey-Ford about their evocative music, their influences and their lives and projects in the capital. Presented by Esmé Patey-Ford.
