The London Uyghur Ensemble performs at Kellaway Concerts in St Catharine’s College, University of Cambridge

The London Uyghur Ensemble

The London Uyghur Ensemble is a London-based group playing traditional and popular music of the Central Asian Uyghurs. The group includes Uyghur musicians from the Uyghur homeland – East Turkistan (the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of China) and from the Uyghur diaspora in Kyrgyzstan, in collaboration with professional British musicians. Our repertoire includes instrumental pieces, dance, composed and traditional songs, and the classical ‘Twelve Muqam’ suites.

This concert will feature the entrancing songs and instrumental music of the Central Asian Uyghurs. Singer Rahima Mahmut is accompanied by an ensemble of long-necked lutes, spike fiddle and frame drum. Deeply imbued by the Sufi ethos, with its limping rhythms and ecstatic poetry this easternmost example of maqam traditions opens the door to a new musical world.
